Christmas songs have a special, indefinable magic, and we can all tell them when we hear them. But what is it exactly that makes a Christmas song sound Christmassy? Because it's more than just lyrics about snow and chestnuts. What exactly is ‘the sound of Christmas’?

This Christmas we wanted to uncover what makes a Christmas song -  so we challenged up-and-coming London band, Hotel Lux, not exactly known for a Christmassy sound, to work it out for us by writing and recording one, in just one day, at London's legendary RAK studios.

The Carvery was then mixed by Ben Baptie, one of the best British engineers working today, who mixed the latest album by The Strokes, on the same challenge of identifying the Christmas sound, but this time from behind the mixing desk.
